History of Redbank Estate

A Legacy of Heritage and Excellence

Redbank Estate is more than just a place to stay; it's a piece of Australian heritage, brimming with history, beauty, and a touch of Thoroughbred legacy. From its origins in the early 19th century to its prestigious status as part of the world-renowned Wakefield Stud, the estate invites you to experience a story that's deeply woven into the fabric of Australia's horse country.

The Origins of Redbank Estate

Originally part of the historic Redbank Village, this property's roots stretch back to 1828, when an inn and store were first established on the land. Serving as a vital stop for travelers and traders. Redbank became an important center amidst the vast countryside of the Upper Hunter Valley. In 1834 a hospital was built on the property to serve the local community.

In 1920, William and Minnie Badgery purchased the estate and transformed it into a premium breeding ground for champion horses. Under their stewardship, the estate became home to some of Australia's finest Thoroughbreds, laying the foundation for what would later become Wakefield Stud – a name synonymous with excellence in horse breeding.

Subzero Roses in our garden, a tribute to our champion

One of the proudest achievements in Wakefield Stud's history is Subzero, the iconic Thoroughbred who captured the nation's heart by winning the 1992 Melbourne Cup. Born and raised on the very land you'll explore, Subzero went on to become an enduring symbol of Australian horse racing and later a beloved ambassador for the sport.
